Description of the service : Each student provides tutoring (homework assistance) to an immigrant child or adolescent who has been in the country for less than 5 years. An important focus is on developing instructional strategies tomeet the needs of these students. A reflection on this experience is made. This is done by seeking to validate the children’s cultures and experiences by using children’s books that are culturally relevant to them and that present positive representations of children and other ethnic groups-specifically African Americans and Latinos. The tasks that may be included in the portfolio are: Assessing reading andwriting skills of children and reflecting on the results findings and implications of this assessment; Developing the child’s oral expression skills by asking him/ her to tell a story and then being asked about it, etc. This is worked on during the semester with the same child.
